Cancellation of binding courses for Bachelor of Science in Engineering and Master of Science in Engineering students
We recommend you also read the rules on mandatory courses on DTU Inside here: Study rules > Teaching > Binding courses. This page outlines different situations where you can be exempted from a course, such as if it is no longer offered.
Cancellation of binding courses for Bachelor of Science in Engineering and Master of Science in Engineering students, where the courses are mandatory in your study plan
When you are enrolled in a Bachelor of Science in Engineering or Master of Science in Engineering programme at DTU, you must pass the mandatory courses according to your study plan. You can find the study plan that applies to you in your programme specification at www.studieinformation.dtu.dk.
Only in very exceptional cases can an exemption be granted from mandatory courses listed in your programme specification. In such cases, there must be documentation of exceptional circumstances directly related to the course which prevent you from passing the course.
In your exemption application, you must, therefore, describe why you believe there are exceptional circumstances directly related to the specific course from which you wish to be exempted. You must explain why you believe these exceptional circumstances will, over a prolonged period, prevent you from completing and passing the course.
You must include documentation for the circumstances you describe as exceptional. This documentation should support your argument that you cannot complete or pass the course.
The documentation must explain why the exceptional circumstance prevents you from passing the course. An example could be if the course involves laboratory exercises, and you are allergic to certain chemicals used. In this case, the documentation should be a medical statement confirming your allergy to these chemicals and that this allergy prevents you from passing the course.
Exceptional circumstances that apply to all courses are not grounds for an exemption when applying to be released from a mandatory course.
You must also include a statement from your head of study indicating which course you should take instead of the course from which you seek exemption.
You must upload the application, documentation, and head of study statement to DTU's exemption system.
Cancellation of binding courses for Bachelor of Science in Engineering and Master of Science in Engineering students, where the courses are part of the mandatory course categories in your study plan
When you are enrolled in a Bachelor of Science in Engineering or Master of Science in Engineering programme at DTU, you must pass a specified number of ECTS credits from the mandatory course categories in your study plan. You can find the study plan that applies to you in your programme specification at www.studieinformation.dtu.dk.
If you have used an exam attempt in a course that is part of one of the mandatory course categories in your study plan, you must pass the course. Only in very exceptional cases can an exemption be granted from mandatory courses listed in your study programme. In such cases, there must be documentation of exceptional circumstances directly related to the course which prevent you from passing the course.

When do you NOT need to include a head of study statement for a semi-mandatory course?
If you can choose between several courses in the course category that includes the course from which you seek exemption, you do not need to include a head of study statement.
You must upload the application, documentation, and head of study statement to DTU's exemption system.
Cancellation of binding Courses for Bachelor of Science in Engineering and Master of Science in Engineering students when it is an elective course at DTU
You can choose from a range of elective courses in your study programme. See the rules for selecting elective courses in your programme specification at www.studieinformation.dtu.dk.
Once you have taken the exam for an elective course at DTU, the elective course becomes a binding part of your course of study. The possibility of being exempted from a binding course is extremely limited. Therefore, we recommend you always seek guidance from DTU's Study Guidance first.
Only in very exceptional cases can an exemption be granted from binding courses, even if the course is part of your elective course category. In such cases, there must be documentation of exceptional circumstances directly related to the course, which prevent you from passing it.
