Extension of leave of absence beyond one year
As a DTU student, you can apply for a justified leave of absence for up to one year. You can find the leave of absence rules here: https://www.inside.dtu.dk/en/undervisning/studieregler/regler-for-orlov
If you need to extend your current leave of absence beyond one year—for example, to have a continuous leave period of 1.5 years—you must apply for an exemption to extend your leave of absence beyond the one-year limit.
In your exemption application, you need to provide reasons explaining why you require an extension of your current leave of absence and briefly outline your plan for returning to your studies after your leave ends. You must include documentation to support your need for an extended leave of absence. For instance, if your leave of absence is due to illness, you should provide medical documentation that clearly states the need for an extension and specifies how long this extension should be.
When is an exemption not required for a leave of absence extension?
If you have already returned to your studies after a leave of absence and then realize that you need another leave of absence period, you do not need to apply for an exemption for an extension of your previous leave, as this would count as a new leave period. If you need to apply for a new justified leave of absence from DTU, please refer to the abovementioned leave of absence rules.
You only need to apply for an exemption to extend your current justified leave of absence if you need to extend it beyond one year.
