Cancellation of exam enrolment

On this page, you can read about the rules for:

  • applying for an exemption to cancel exam enrollment in a course where it is your first time being enrolled.
  • applying for an exemption to cancel exam enrollment in a course where you have previously participated in the exam one or more times.

Exemption for canceling exam enrollment for the first time
You can apply for an exemption to have an exam enrollment in a course canceled if:

  • you have never participated in the exam for the course.
  • you do not plan to take the exam in this course now or later in your studies.

If the exam has been held, your registration should state one of the following: 'No Show' (EM), 'Sick' (S), or 'Not Approved' (IG).

What should your exemption application include?
Your application should explain why you did not cancel your exam enrollment before the withdrawal deadline. You do not need to explain why you did not take the exam.

It is advantageous to mention which alternative course you plan to take instead.

What should you upload besides your application?
If the course is mandatory according to your study plan, you must always include a statement from your head of study indicating which course you should take instead. That also applies if the course is semi-mandatory and there are no other courses in the relevant category for you to choose from.

When do you not need a head of study statement for a semi-mandatory course?
If you have the option of choosing from several courses within the same category, you do not need to include a head of study statement.

You can apply for exemption through DTU's exemption system.

Have you used several exam attempts but never attended any of the exams?
If you have used multiple exam attempts but never participated in any of the exams, leading to a record of 'No Show' (EM), 'Sick' (S), or 'Not Approved' (IG) for all attempts, you can, in exceptional cases, apply for an exemption to have all your exam enrollments cancelled.

In your application, you must describe the extraordinary circumstances that prevented you from cancelling your exam enrollment before the withdrawal deadlines in each period.

Exemption for cancelling exam enrollment after participating one or more times
If you have previously taken an exam and are registered for more than one attempt without cancelling on time, resulting in an EM or IG result, you can apply for an exemption to cancel that specific exam attempt.

What should you document in your application?
Your application must explain and provide documentation for the exceptional reason why you couldn't cancel the exam in time. For example, if illness prevented you from canceling within the deadline, you must attach documentation proving you were sick during the withdrawal period.

You do not need to attach documentation for not attending the exam but rather for why you couldn't cancel before the deadline.

If you became ill just before the exam, and this is why you want to cancel the attempt, you can find the rules on how to do this under DTU Inside > Study Rules > Exams > Illness in connection with exams.

For the committee to approve the exemption, you must provide strong documentation of exceptional circumstances.

Reasons that will not be approved for exemption
You should be aware that the following cannot be considered as grounds for exemption:

  • Lack of awareness of the rules.
  • Lack of awareness of the deadlines for exam enrolment or withdrawal.
  • Forgetfulness.
  • Reasons occurring after the exam withdrawal deadline.

What happens if your exemption is approved?
If your application is approved, the specific exam attempt will be cancelled. However, the course will still be a mandatory part of your programme, and you must pass the course later to complete your degree.
